Overview
This article describes what Hybrid Connection Manager is and what it is used for.
What does it do?
The Hybrid Connection Manager allows on-premises SQL databases to communicate with Azure without being connected to the Internet.
Why do I need it?
The Patient Portal and Clinician Apps live in Azure. Your Compucare database will need to be able to communicate with these apps securely and the apps need to communicate with the database. Normally, connecting a database to Azure would require it to be connected to the Internet. However, since Compucare databases contain sensitive patient data, this could pose a security risk. The Hybrid Connection Manager enables an on-premises database to communicate with Azure directly and safely, without connecting to the Internet.
What is Azure?
Azure is a service provided by Microsoft that enables Streets Heaver to expand their datacentre capacity without needing to buy and maintain additional physical infrastructure.
Who installs Hybrid Connection Manager?
When a project for Patient Portal, Clinician App or Report Generator with an on-premises Compucare database is initiated, Streets Heaver will send you instructions to create a virtual server and install the Hybrid Connection Manager on this. Streets Heaver do not install Hybrid Connection Manager.
How is it used?
When the Patient Portal, Clinician App or Report Generator is first set up, Streets Heaver will provide you with key codes. You will need to enter these codes into the Hybrid Connection Manager. This will confirm that the traffic from SQL to Azure is genuine and allow the communication each way. This is all done over Port 443 (HTTPS) for a secure connection.
What if my database is in Datacentre?
If your database is in Streets Heaver's Datacentre, you do not need to install Hybrid Connection Manager. The entire connection process will be managed by Streets Heaver.
